HELPING NEURONS TO REMEMBER: SYNAPTIC PLASTICITY, MENTAL RETARDATION AND A STIMULATING ENVIRONMENT

Speaker: PROFESSOR DR HUIBERT MANSVELDER (VU, CNCR)

Huib Mansvelder (1968) is head of the Research Group "Functional Imaging of Neuronal Networks" at the Center for Neurogenomics and Cognitive Research (CNCR, VU University, Amsterdam). His research focusses on "Plasticity and dynamics of neuronal networks involved in cognition". He received a VIDI grant from NWO in 2006 (Elucidating the cognition enhancing effects of nicotine) and is a member of "De Jonge Akademie" (Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences).

Learning and memory are fundamental cognitive functions of our brain.

When information is acquired and stored the contact points or synapses between neurons change. In patients suffering from syndromes associated with low IQ, such as Fragile X syndrome, learning and memory abilities are reduced. Neurons and synapses in the brains of these patients show an altered appearance and functionality. In a mouse model of Fragile X, we find that the ability of synapses to change is strongly reduced. The synapses can change but it takes more effort. Using two-photon laser-scanning microscopy, which enables visualisation of synapses in living brain tissues and studying their functionality, we find that calcium signalling is unreliable. Mechanisms for synaptic plasticity are in place, but require stronger neuronal activity to be triggered. I will discuss the mechanisms underlying deficits in synaptic plasticity and calcium signalling in mental retardation, and show how synaptic plasticity can be restored by stimulating environments.

  3. 17-01 Feest IBL en LBC

    Beste Biologiemedewerker,

    Wanneer:  Donderdag 17 januari 2008
    Waar:       Cafe De Tregter
    Aanvang:  20:00 uur
    kosten:    GEEN!

En waarom zou U daar even komen kijken?

  5. 19-12-07: Conservation and Behavior Symposium

    More info: Rewildingsymposium@biology.leidenuniv.nl and www.rewilding-symposium.weebly.com

    Conference theme: Rewilding the Netherlands

This symposium will address the idea of “Re-wilding in America”, as featured in several high-impact scientific journals (Nature, Science) over the last few years.

The idea of re-installing top-predators and large herbivores, such as African lions and elephants on the great plains in the USA has been controversial, but we think the ecological and behavioural rationale behind it certainly warrants serious attention. For most of us it might sound ridiculous, but a number of famous scientists are pleading for this idea. This conference will address the arguments both for- and against rewilding.

The Rewilding idea is a hot and current topic in which many discussion is taking place between scientists that are for and against the implementation of large herbivores and carnivores.

In the Netherlands there are similar ideas for the reintroduction of top predators such as the wolf in the Veluwe.

We envision an interesting discussion, especially in the context of

    1) the high number of wild boars in the Veluwe in the absence of large carnivores, and of
    2) the reintroduction of European bisons in the Dutch dunes, which has already taken place.

We hope that during this symposium we are able to provide a clear perspective on the theoretical considerations and practical implications of the rewilding concept.

Thus the Rewilding concept is current and controversial and thus is our focus for the  Behaviour & Conservation symposium 2007.

NEURON-CHIP INTERFACING: A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO UNDERSTANDING BRAIN FUNCTION AND REPAIR

Speaker: PROFESSOR DR NAWEED SYED (CALGARY)

Naweed Syed, neuroscientist (Canada, 1957; BSc, MSc, University of Karachi;PhD, 1988, University of Leeds) is head of the Departments of Cell Biology & Anatomy and Physiology & Biophysics of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary. He conducts studies on brain development and regeneration. His research looks at how brain cells recognize and connect with each other, how they establish the intricate network of synapses that forms the basis of brain function, and how the brain repairs itself during regeneration.

All nervous system functions, ranging from simple reflexes to complex motor patterns and learning and memory are controlled by large networks of brain cells. Thus, if one wants to understand how brain controls various functions, it is imperative that one acquires the ability to simultaneously, and non-invasively monitor the activities of large neuronal ensembles - a possibility that does not current exist in the field of neuroscience. Moreover, because natural replacement of injured nervous tissue seldom, if ever occurs in the intact brain, it is essential that we develop novel technologies whereby brain tissue can be interfaced directly with the electronics. Such an approach must ensure a two-way link between the electronics and the neurons. By interfacing individual neurons with silicon chips, we have developed such a bionic hybrid which enables us to stimulate and record neuronal activity from synaptically connected brain cells. Evidence will be presented to demonstrate that such a brain-chip interfacing approach holds tremendous potntial for further brain controlled prosthetics and regeneration devices.
