  1. Excerpts from the Diary of a Mad Overlord - Part 5

Previous ramblings: Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4 < Week 8 > < Garden of Tarn dungeon, level 3, "Pit Fiend (23)" > Dear Diary, Ah, Diary, It seems like it has been months since I last had time to record my thoughts here. These pesky heroes must have been lost in a time warp going from the second to third level of the Garden of Tarn dungeon. Whatever the cause was, they finally showed up knocking on the door of the Pit Fiend's lair. The heroes were very cautious and set up a defensive...

  2. More colorful beasties

With the plan of getting together this coming Saturday and playing Descent (after a 2+ month break), I have been finishing up several more sets of Descent miniatures. Pictures of the latest sets are below. As always, you can click on the thumbnail to view the larger image. I must say that I am making much better progress on the figures than I originally thought. In my first post about painting the minis I thought it would take 9 to 12 months to finish them. Now about four months later I find myself with a large majority of them done...

  3. Yes, I would like a little cheese with my whine.

Wow, has this been a bad few months for gaming. We missed this month's Meetup group, the first since it started. The previous two have been less than stellar and I didn't want to write about them because all I'd be doing is whining. Other than that, we've hardly had any time for games at all. Okay, so I've changed my mind and I'm going to whine a little now. :-) Last month, with it just before Halloween, I brought Last Night on Earth to the Meetup in hopes of a fun, spooky game. I set it up on the...

  4. The art show returns

As Susan lamented in the last post, the gaming has been lacking for us lately. This includes our Descent campaign that has been a victim of overbooked schedules for everyone involved. However, my project for painting the Descent miniatures continues to make progress. Having completed the smaller single space creatures, I have moved into the larger two and four space creatures. There are generally fewer figures in each set, but being bigger, they are still taking about the same time to complete a set. I have recently completed four sets of figures which you can see below. As always, you...

  5. October Ramblings

My gaming continues to be sparse lately, but I finally made it down to Ed's Friday lunchtime games and played a golden oldie, Sleuth. This game is only three years younger than me, which makes it downright ancient. I still have my family's original 3M copy, although we played with the newer FacetoFace version. I generally stink at pure deduction games like this, but I actually won. I think that I've finally learned how to take good notes. Or, more likely, the fact that I was hyped up on coffee made me unusually focused. For once, nobody (including me!) messed...

  6. Just a quick post

Yes, I've been pretty quiet on this blog lately. I thought that I'd post something before Ed completely takes it over with Descent stuff. I will have to say, Descent is an obsession around here lately. We've played four all-day sessions of Road to Legend and I'm having loads of fun with it, even though we heroes are getting our butts kicked. I've also been playing another game that scratches the same itch - Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition. The games feel very similar to me, yet each is different in its own way. I've got an article comparing it...

  7. Excerpts from the Diary of a Mad Overlord - Part 4

Previous ramblings: Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 <Week 5> <Thelsvan Highway dungeon, level 1, "Bag of Bones (17)"> Dear Diary, The razorwing Gax has been monitoring that adventurer band since their little "play date" along the Thelsvan Highway. He sent a report that the band, fearing the storm clouds to the east (reportedly from the wizard Ike), decided to take their chances in the dungeon along the highway. Ha, ha. Like they can do anything to King Janius, that old Bag of Bones. Adventurers have been trying to lay him to a final rest for ages. I...

  8. Here we go again

Yep, that's right. Another week and more painted Descent minis to show off. No, it may look like it, but this is not turning into a miniatures only blog. In fact we hosted a pretty busy game day on Labor Day and played several good new games. However, I did get a couple more sets of Descent mins finished up between our son's soccer games this weekend so I figured I would go ahead an post them. Descent Ferrox tribe Ferrox master and regular Descent Kobold horde Kobold master and regular You can see all of the Descent miniatures I...

  9. More painted Descent minis

I'm making pretty good progress on painting the Descent minis. Better than I thought I would, but there are still a lot more to go. I have completed four different sets since our last Descent session. With a few weeks before our next session, I should be able to get a couple more groups done. Descent Sorcerers Razorwing flock Normal Razorwing and master Descent Priests Deep Elves Deep Elves - back You can see all of the Descent miniatures I have painted in the picture gallery....

  10. Gulf Games 22

Another Gulf Games has come and gone. We've been going for six years now, and we have made it our annual family vacation. It's now less about trying all the new games and more about getting to see all our friends. It seems like with every passing year I spend less time playing and more time hanging out, drinking wine and eating chocolate late into the night. I did, however, manage to squeeze a little gaming in with the socializing. Here are my brief thoughts on the new games that I did play: Games good enough to definitely make the...

  11. Excerpts from the Diary of a Mad Overlord - Part 3

Previous ramblings: Part 1 / Part 2 Dear Diary, This is starting to look like another fine week. The report from Sir Alric just arrived. Kar-Amag-Atoth arrived in Nerekhall as planned. He met with Sir Alric before moving on to Greyhaven as ordered. As for Sir Alric, he continues working on the siege engines needed to move forward with my plans for Nerekhall. He is almost complete with the construction phase. After the last two busy weeks for me, I have planned a much needed rest this week. I need to build up my store of energy before tackling my...

  12. More minis - Beastmen

So I was able to squeeze in enough time before heading out on vacation to finish up my second set of Descent figures. I did the Beastmen this time. Three masters and 6 regulars. Links to the pictures are below. Enjoy. Descent Beastmen Beastmen ready to battle A Beastmen squad You can see all of the Descent miniatures I have painted in the picture gallery....

  13. New Reviews

I've posted a review of Toledo here recently as well as Chicago Poker a while back. They are both also posted on Boardgamegeek so you may have already seen them if you care. We are off to Gulf Games next week, a small, private gaming get-together we go to every summer. I have no particular agenda this time around as far as what games I'd like to play. I'm mostly looking forward to spending time with old friends. Hopefully, I'll have a lot to blog about when I get home. I actually have a backlog of things to write about,...

  14. Lots of Runebound

And yet even more Wallace........... Runebound is not a game that most people associate with Martin Wallace, including me, but his name is right there on the box as a co-designer (along with Darrell Hardy). I wonder how much of the design is his. My younger son, Shea (age 12) and I have been making our way through the expansions. So far, we have played two of the big box ones and thoroughly enjoyed them both. Mind you, Shea and I don't exactly play like the game is intended to be played. Rather than a competitive race, we play it...

  15. Into the mini painting black hole

We have playing a lot a Descent lately, three sessions in the last couple of months, one normal Descent game and the first two sessions of our Road to Legend campaign. But those three sessions total about 15 or 16 hours of game play. Spurred on by all this playing and the desire to do a non computer related project, I decided to dig out my paints and paint the Descent miniatures. Descent skeletons, primedand ready for some paint This is not a small undertaking. The base Descent game comes with 80 minis (60 monsters and 20 unique heroes). The...
