The firing comes in the wake of the dismissal Monday of general manager Bill Bavasi and, a week before that, hitting coach Jeff Pentland. Jim Riggleman, the bench coach who has managed the Cubs and the Padres, takes over as the club's 13th manager. McLaren won't have any comment until at least Friday and Riggleman was unavailable as he was with the team flying to to Atlanta to open a series with the Braves.
